DJ Irie Spiniversity
Miami Dolphins Jason Taylor and internationally renowned DJ Irie hosted the second session of "Irie's
DJ Spiniversity," in the Jason Taylor Reading Room Jan 29, 2010 at the Miramar Youth Enrichment
Center. The program is an after-school learning to DJ program available to free to kids currently
attending the Jason Taylor Reading Room programs. Spiniversity taught by instructors from the Scratch
DJ Academy, out of Miami, includes director Jamie Keough. The class appeals to the students' love of
music by allowing them to sit in front of two turntables and mixing boards and learn the art of
scratching and spinning. According to Andy Kent, who judged Taylor's initial attempt at spinning
the vinyl, said "he (Taylor) could benefit from attending more of the 15-week curriculum." "I didn't
have a scratching academy for me when I was growing up in the reading room so I'm bad," said
Taylor, who just finished his 12th season in the NFL and 11th with the Dolphins. "I don't have
turntables at home, but with a little more practice, I don't know how far along I'll be but I'll at
least be on beat." Irie, who is the official DJ of the Miami Heat said he will make one
of the DJ students his guest DJ at a future Miami Heat game.
